19 Apr Keep Kids Safe and Pests Out
Although many kids love insects and bugs, you want to avoid them interacting while in your home. However, as a parent, you become wary of pesticides, poisons and other chemicals that holds the potential to harm your children. With the right procedures, keeping your kids safe and the pests out at the same time becomes possible.
Each different type of pest requires different practices to safely remove them. Following these tips closely ensures a safe and easy removal of these pests without dangerous chemicals.
Are ants taking over your home or yard? Try to locate their entry points and seal them with caulk or weatherstripping. Though often a challenge with children, try to clean up any crumbs or spilt food and store sugary foods and fruits in the fridge. Seal all food containers and prevent moisture, which ants thrive on, by applying caulk around tubs, sinks and leaky pipes. To kill ants, spray them with soapy water. This not only kills the ant, but also erases the trail that other ants follow.
Don’t let the bed bugs bite your children. If you spot bed bugs in their mattresses or furniture, vacuum thoroughly, seal all visible cracks and crevices, wash all clothing and bedding in very high heat and throw out any severely infected furniture. Make sure to label the furniture as infested so that no one brings it home and spreads the bed bugs!
With few things in life worse than mosquito bites, reduce the amount of mosquitos in and around your house by removing any stagnant water, such as unused pools, bird baths and puddles. Make sure to cover up and put mosquito netting around baby carriers, and use repellents with lower toxicity levels such as citronella oil.
If you have a mouse or rat problem, using rat poison creates more danger than good for your children. Hide mouse traps in areas that the rodents might frequent, but your children can’t access. Examples include under a sink, or hidden at the very back of a pantry.
Not all of these solutions remove larger pest problems. If you need an exterminator to finish the job, put your trust in a pest control company that offer non-toxic solutions. Some exterminators, such as Smitter Pest Control, use safer, environmentally friendly equipment and chemicals for pest control.
